One fact that is widely accepted by UK and Ireland experts in vein treatment is the need for ultrasound scanning prior to any treatment. This is also known as Doppler scan, Duplex scan, Colour Doppler: they all mean the same thing
Ultrasound helps to decide if laser, radio frequency, or ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy treatment is possible. These are recommended FIRST line treatments when possible, using the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) criteria. If you don't have a scan, you can't realistically have these treatments considered. We now know that even with THREAD veins, a scan is usually required as up to 25% of patients have underlying vein disease that may need dealt with first. The meeting took place in The Ark conference centre in Basingstoke.
It was good to meet and interact with the leading experts in sclerotherapy and all types of vein treatment. We continue to provide treatment in line with the standards set out by the group. This includes laser, radio frequency and foam treatment which still are the recommended techniques for most patients with varicose veins. It was again emphasised the importance of ultrasound assessment of veins before any treatment and we continue to undertake this as part of our routine assessment.
