Foam sclerotherapy Information for patients
Foam sclerotherapy is a treatment for varicose veins which involves injecting ‘Foam’ directly into the vein. The foam is made by mixing a solution called Fibrovein with air to make a white foam.
The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) has approved Foam Sclerotherapy for use in the NHS. Foam Sclerotherapy has been widely used in many centres and is recognised as an appropriate method of managing varicose veins. The safety and efficacy of this treatment has been established by extensive research.

Radiofrequency Ablation
Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally-invasive procedure used in the treatment of varicose veins and is an alternative to the traditional stripping operation. Results suggest that it is as good or better and much quicker than a surgical operation for the treatment of varicose veins and it is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) as the first line treatment for varicose veins.
It has a number of advantages over the standard operation. These include:
- It is performed using local anaesthetic
- It is quick
-You are able to return to work either the same or following day
- It avoids the incisions (scars) resultant from a surgical operation -There is typically very little discomfort or pain after the procedure

Microsclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a safe and well-established treatment for thread veins on the legs. Although there are a number of alternative treatments, it remains the most reliable and successful of them all.
A very small needle is inserted into the vein and a solution is injected. Most people find this to be relatively painless. The thread veins will look more obvious in the days after injection but start to fade within 1-2 weeks. Final results are best judged after 12 weeks. On average, 60-80% of treated veins disappear after successful injection, and two treatment sessions are usually sufficient for most people. If you have more extensive numbers of thread veins more sessions may be required. We can advise on this at your consultation.
